Slouching towards Bethlehem.....

Oh, dear. Frankathon II is now confirmed.

Avid readers may recall that the inaugural Frankathon a little under a year ago darn near killed me. My disreputable old drinking buddy, Big Frank, visited from Korea (fleeing their "terminally boring" Mid-Autumn Festival, Chuseok) for a whole week. It was a demanding week.

Back then, of course, I had a relatively 'straight' job, working 9am-6pm three days a week. This was a mixed blessing. On the one hand, it left me even more exhausted at the end of the week. But on the other hand, at least I had a persuasive excuse for going home before 4am a few times.

This time I have no such protection. It could be a rough week.

There is no appropriate place to put this but... 4-1! Against Johnny Croat, unbeaten at home. Hat trick for the lad Walcott.

Amazing!

I guess that's what comes of putting on a winger who's actually a striker - he kept popping up in the box and the Croats forgot to mark him.

Actually the Croats pretty much forgot to turn up to the entire game; they were unrecognisable from the side that trounced Germany in the Euros three months ago. I think the result was more down to them being CRAP than to us being anything very wonderful (I mean, a decent keeper should probably have stopped Theo's first two efforts).

Calamity looked about as confidence-depleting as usual in goal for us, but luckily nobody really managed a decent shot against him.

Emile Heskey? I thought you were dead! Now, I've always had a bit of a soft spot for the big lad; I thought he did well for us in the '02 World Cup, but.... we must be poorly off for strikers if he's getting back in the side now. We must be poorly off for goalkeepers to recall James (how about Kirkland??). We must be poorly off for right-backs to resort to Wes Brown.

It would be lovely to qualify without making too much of a slog of it for once. But I still don't see any sign that we're going to be able to trouble the likes of Brazil, Germany, Argentina, and Spain in two years' time.

I still haven't heard the Andorra result.

All I can say in defence of my red & white team is that your guys were simply better, and crushed my fellow Croatians. So, what is the score now, are we even?

Gosh, a Croatian reader! That's so cool.

If you search around on both my blogs, TIH, I think you will find some evidence that I have long been an admirer of your national team - and was rooting for them both in '96 and this year (and in World Cups in between).

I don't understand quite what happened the other night. It's hard to take any pleasure in a victory where the other side was so poor. And one doesn't really expect Croatia to be poor, ever. 2 or 3 months ago, I thought they had a decent chance of winning the European Championship. On Wednesday night, they looked like they would have got turned over by Liechtenstein. Football is a funny game, to be sure.

I hope your guys get it back together soon, and give us a close run in the group.

I was reading your blogs and indeed noticed many a reference to our national team. Thanks.

Must admit that while reading at one point I was peeved by references to Johnny the Usta… but also glad to see that it was only a one time occurrence hence decided against responding.

And yes, do not know what happened last Wednesday but have all the confidence that Bilic will spring them back. He did say just before the match, in an effort to lower everyone’s expectations that he would not be surprised if the team lost to the English. But hey, plenty of time for them to spring back. And Dudu will hopefully be playing soon again. And am afraid the above just about exhausts my knowledge of football .
