Bon mot of the week

"Anybody can be a non-drunk. It takes a special talent to be a drunk. It takes endurance. Endurance is more important than truth."

(Henry Chinaski - writer and drunk, played by Mickey Rourke in Barfly; based on the novels of Charles Bukowski)

By the way, the
unattributed witticism that I posted as my Weekly Bon Mot at the start of this month was another film quotation, a line from endearing sleazeball Tommy Basilio (Steve Buscemi) in Trees Lounge - one of the great films about bars, written and directed by Buscemi.

So...you got around to seeing Barfly? I, on the other hand, need to find a copy of Tree's Lounge. I've been wanting to see it for years, but have never managed to watch it.

No, in fact, I was prompted by our conversation a couple of weeks ago to check out the IMDB entry on Barfly. Both that and Trees Lounge are, I fear, going to be very difficult to find here in BJ. I should make the trip out to Tom's sometime: his selection is bigger than most, and has the distinct advantage of being arranged (more or less) alphabetically. The Music Box on Gulou Dongdajie has a great selection of 'classics', but mainly from the 40s to 60s rather than more recent decades - but the owner is the kind of dude that might take requests.... Worth checking out.

You can watch Barfly here in its entirety.

Wow, thanks for the tip.

Although with the connection speed I've got at the moment, I'm really dubious about whether online streaming is going to be viable.

Well swing by our place some time and I'll put it. The Toshiba is not exactly "theater quality," but it does the job.
