Bon mot for the week

"For my part, I will have only those glorious, manly pleasures of being very drunk, and very slovenly."

William Wycherley (1640-1715)

It's good to know that the "manly pleasures" haven't changed in 300 years!

There is something oddly reassuring about that, isn't there?

I can't believe I'd missed this gem all these years.

No idea where it comes from. One of the plays, I assume, but I haven't been able to track down which one.

Don't know if you can access Google Books over there, but it appears to come from Wycherly's play The Country Wife. [source]

Oh, thanks, JES. What would I do without you? (My own searching, possibly...)

That's his best known play, and I think I read it, yonks ago in high school. I thought the quote would probably have been from there somewhere, but couldn't remember it, couldn't find it.
