The importance of beer - a bon mot

"You can't be a real country unless you have a beer and an airline. It helps if you have some kind of a football team, or some nuclear weapons, but at the very least you need a beer."

Frank Zappa (1940-1993)

I mentioned last week on Froogville that Zappa had been appointed as a 'cultural ambassador' for the new Czech Republic by President Havel in 1990. They definitely have beer. And a good national football team. I assume they have an airline too - but that somehow seems so much less important.

It’s called Czech Airlines, funnily enough.

They are pretty big and have a rep for leaving people behind on their connecting flights. Very nearly happened to me once but the lovely people (about 200 of them) let me queue barge as this is common knowledge and my flight was leaving right then. They also gave us metal knives and forks in flight, which they then later confiscated from me (yes I was nicking them), as they were considered too dangerous to take on their connecting flight - go figure??

Nice to see FZ was working his magic diplomatically and so eloquently (not).

I think he is right about beer but think he may have been out of his depth mentioning the nucs! Although again SADLY he may have been right.

Can you name me a single airline that does not "have a rep for leaving people behind on their connecting flights?"

There is a special level of hell reserved for all who work with airlines in any capacity.

Well, I feel they're probably suffering their hell here on earth. I have a lot of sympathy for the people that have to till customer-facing roles in airlines - it's not an easy job.

Especially in China - I posted a few months ago over on Froogvilleabout a 24-hour delay I suffered in Hangzhou, where I really feared at one point that the poor schmucks manning the desk at the boarding gate might get lynched.

what? no Jiangjinjiu post? I thought it was a performance well-deserving of some Froog commentary.

I'd love to know the name of that band.

on airlines... (lest I get another reprimand for commenting on the wrong post) it must indeed be a difficult job. but some certainly handle it better than others!! Flew Qatar Airlines for the first time a few days ago, and other than the middle of the night too-long layover in not-so-interesting Doha airport (better than Abu Dhabi, but it sure ain't Suvarnabhumi), I have no complaints. Food - edible (dare I say, even "good"); service - with a smile, always; seats and leg room - less can of sardines, more office chair (which is saying a lot for airlines nowadays!)); price - not bad, considering it was a last minute purchase (consider this: last minute economy ticket on United Airlines from USA to PRC is U$8,000... I think that's my entire year's worth of travel budget swallowed up in one leg of one roundtrip flight!)
