Simple pleasures

Another gig.

Not the best I've ever been to, but....

My beloved SUBS were playing the just-pre-midnight slot.

And the wonderful Kang Mao was wearing a pair of spray-on black hipster jeans that were almost indecent.

I am a man. I am easily pleased.

For some bizarre reason, the bill last night was trimmed from the expected four bands to only three..... and the rather angstful RETROS went on last.

They were particularly downbeat mode last night. They came over like a less melodic version of early Joy Division. The only intelligible lyric in their first song was the oft-repeated "suicide" - not really what you want, to see in the New Year. I stayed for a couple more songs, but it didn't get any cheerier.

Of course, I stopped in at The Pool Bar on the way home - played extraordinarily well (without actually managing to win very much), stayed till nearly 3am. Walked home. Sat down in front of the computer with a nightcap. Got lured into nosing around on YouTube looking for favourite Pogues songs - god, there's a lot of Pogues stuff on there!

So - turned in shortly before dawn, only dragged myself out of bed at 1.30pm......

Starting the New Year as I mean to go on???

Or did I mean New Order? Perhaps I did. I wasn't paying a lot of attention to contemporary music in the later '80s, and I struggle now to differentiate between some of the bands of that era?

Which was the more miserable and death-obsessed of the two?

I recall the wonderful Attila The Stockbroker (a musical 'unsuitable role model') once sang the lyric: "I'm even more miserable than New Order. And I've got a longer mac than them as well."

Oh, now I remember - they were basically the same band, weren't they? They re-invented themselves as New Order after the suicide of Ian Curtis.

I use the same excuse for my recent confusion of Minnesota with Wisconsin - basically the same State!
